Indonesia recalls its ambassador to Australia as tensions rise over spying revelations

INDONESIA recalled its ambassador to Australia over claims that Australian spy agencies tried to listen to the phone calls of President Susilo Bambang Yudhoyono, Foreign Minister Marty Natalegawa said.

Natalegawa said the envoy was being called back to Jakarta for "consultations" after secret documents leaked by US intelligence fugitive Edward Snowden named the president as well as his wife and senior ministers as targets of the surveillance.

Earlier tonight, Indonesia's Coordinating Minister for Legal, Political and Security Affairs Djoko Suyanto said he would demand Australia make a public explanation about the claims and make a commitment that it would not monitor the phones again.

Top secret documents from Australia's Defence Signals Directorate, leaked by fugitive US intelligence whistleblower Edward Snowden and published by the ABC and The Guardian, list 10 officials and their phone details - beginning with President Susilo Bambang Yudhoyono and wife Ani.

The document, dated November 2009, has an Australian Department of Defence letterhead. The headline is "IA Leadership Targets + Handsets".

Indonesia's Foreign Affairs Ministry would "summon Indonesian ambassador in Canberra for consultation", Air Marshal Suyanto said in a text sent to this evening.

He also said Indonesia would review the exchange of information with Australia and "all other cooperation".

Australia's Foreign Minister Julie Bishop will be told the issue will have a negative impact on the countries' bilateral relationship.

Earlier today Prime Minister Tony Abbott declined to comment on reports Australian spies tried to listen to the phone calls of President Susilo Bambang Yudhoyono, his wife and senior ministers.

"I am aware of media reports," Mr Abbott told parliament.

"All governments gather information.

"The Australian government never comments on specific intelligence matters.

"This has been the long tradition of governments of both political persuasions and I don't intend to change that today."

Mr Abbott was responding in question time to a query from Australian Greens MP Adam Bandt.

Mr Bandt had asked if the reports were true, if Australia was still doing it and if the prime minister supported it.

The revelations come amid continuing tensions between Australia and Indonesia over spying after an earlier Snowden leak suggested Australia used its Jakarta embassy to spy.

Mr Abbott also told parliament the Australia government used all the resources at its disposal, including information, "to help our friends and our allies, not to harm them".

"My first duty is to protect Australia and too advance our national interest," he said.

"I will never ever depart from that.

"Consistent with that duty I will never say or do anything that might damage the strong relationship and the close cooperation that we have with Indonesia."

The prime minister said the relationship with Indonesia was most important and he was determined to foster it.

"A relationship that I am determined will grow stronger in the months and years ahead," he added.

Earlier, former coalition government foreign minister Alexander Downer said the revelations would be damaging to Australia.

"It's a shocking situation in which Australia will pay a big price," Sky News cited Mr Downer as saying.

Australian Greens senator Scott Ludlam said there needed for full disclosure on what Australian spy agencies were up to.

"It's kind of insulting to tell someone like the president of Indonesia that he's a security threat," he told Sky News.

Richard Woolcott, a former Australian ambassador to Indonesia, agreed the latest revelations about spying might ratchet up the reaction from Indonesia.

He played down speculation of a possible recall of the Indonesian ambassador.

"When you have problems, the best thing to do is keep your ambassador there," he said.

Former intelligence analyst and now Independent MP Andrew Wilkie said it was important that "we all know how our intelligence services operate".

"Some capabilities must be kept secret ... but it is in the public interest that a light be shone on the way these agencies do business and how they spend billions of dollars of our money," he told reporters in Canberra.

The initial tension between Australia and Indonesia arose a few weeks ago after leaked documents showed Australia had engaged in a US-led intelligence-gathering operation from its embassy in Jakarta.

Pulangkan balik duit

Kuala Lumpur: “Sudah besar panjang, jadi pandai-pandailah fikir.

Missing boy in 'haunted' Villa Nabila misadventure found

Mum: I am relieved because I truly believed that some unearthly being had taken him.

JOHOR BARU: The 16-year-old boy who reportedly went missing after entering Villa Nabila, an abandoned bungalow here listed as one of the top five spookiest places in the country, has been found.

Police said he was found in a friend's house in Taman Mutiara here around early Tuesday.

Johor police chief Senior Deputy Comm Datuk Mohd Mokhtar Mohd Shariff said Mohammad Izzat Izzuddin was found with his girlfriend of the same age.

He said that after receiving a missing person's report from the boy's mother on Saturday, police engaged in a manhunt under Ops Kesan to search for Mohammad Izzat.

"He is still under our custody and we have recorded his and his girlfriend's statements.

"They will be handed over to their respective families soon," he said in a press conference at the state police headquarters here Tuesday.

He said police have contacted the families and the duo would return home later Tuesday.

"The Villa Nabila mystery has been solved. No spirits held him, we found him healthy and well," he added.

Meanwhile, Mohammad Izzat's mother Norhayati Mohamad, 39, expressed her relief that he had been found.

"I am relieved because I truly believed that some unearthly being had taken him," she said when contacted.

Norhayati said she managed to speak to her son briefly and he told her he had forgotten to inform her of his whereabouts.

"He has never gone missing like this before but right now, I am just relieved."

It was reported on social media networks earlier that a teenage boy was missing after he was seen entering the derelict building in Danga Bay here Saturday, and that a group of 23 children were also missing.

Police, however, denied the latter report.

US-based travel portal Expedia recently listed Danga Bay as among the five most haunted places in Malaysia due to the location of Villa Nabila.

The bungalow is perched on a hill that overlooks the Straits of Johor.

There are several versions of how the 40-year-old building earned its reputation, including one about murder in a wealthy Caucasian family that once lived there.

Another version tells of how the maid killed the family, including a daughter named Nabila, and buried their bodies in the compound.

Yet another tale is that the family was killed by two hit men, hired by a relative due to greed.

Villa Nabila: Creepy tales from netizens

PETALING JAYA: Tales of the abandoned structure that is Villa Nabila have been trending on social media, with netizens giving their take on the spooky Johorian site.

Rumours surfaced online that a group of 23 children went missing at Villa Nabila, an abandoned bungalow in Danga Bay here, reputed to be among the five most-haunted places in the country.

The rumours were reportedly false, but police said that they had received one report of a 16-year-old boy who went missing on Saturday, purportedly after he was seen entering the villa.

Many netizens shared their stories and urban legends about the haunted house on Twitter.

"According to Urban Legend, if anyone enters the bungalow in even numbers, they will leave the house in an odd number," said Twitter user @Nisah_Keiko.

@tashasaid2 shared; "Nabila was a little kid, she was killed by her stepmother (some said the maid) who was greedy to possess her former husband’s heirloom."

Even photographers are hesitant to enter the haunted house.

"Based on experience, many photographers don’t dare to visit Villa Nabila because the pictures they’ve snapped would include an uninvited guest," said @trulyas_meen.

@dameenised admits getting the creeps from the stories and pictures of Villa Nabila.

"By looking through the tweets and pictures of the villa are more than enough to frighten me," said @dameenised.

Some sceptics also immerged on social media.

@QillaZnl said that there were so many versions about Villa Nabila, people will not know what to believe.

"The #VillaNabila horror story is totally fiction. It used to be a story for grandmoms to tell their grandchildren. But yes, the villa exist," said @senkaff.

"I reckon #VillaNabila was just an old bungalow behind a highway which is full of dried leaves," said @Officialfesya.

Many Twitter users wished for the safe return of the missing teenager.

JUARA AF 2013-FAIZUL
